16 Book Challenge

Biography/Non-Fiction- Perishing Poles By Anita Ganeri

Image result for pershing poles anita ganeriPerishing Poles I found interesting because I don’t usually read non-fiction books. Every chapter is a new little story or quiz. I found it fascinating reading the part when there were two teams racing to reach the south pole first. The two teams had to overcome frostbite, stormy winds and temperatures up to -40°c. I enjoyed this book because it isn’t something I would just pick off the shelf of the library. I would recommend this book to children 7-10 years because it was an easy read for me.

Accidentally watched the movie first- Matilda By Roald Dahl
Image result for matilda bookMatilda is a sweet little girl who is very smart. She taught herself to read at the age of 3. At the age of 4, Matilda had read all the children's stories in the library. So she went on to reading adults books. She loves her school teacher so she sometimes went home to her house.  Matilda soon discovers an awesome power where she can move things with her eyes. Matildas principal is very mean to she decides to prank her... I really enjoyed reading Matilda and it is a really popular book so I'm sure lots of people would have liked it. I liked the movie more than the book because it described more things and was more interesting.

Try A Classic- Mr Twiddle By Enid Blyton
Image result for mr twiddle stories enid blytonMr Twiddle is one of my favourite books because of the funny humour that goes on in it. Mr Twiddle is always forgetting things and Mrs Twiddle gets annoyed with him. He is always doing something silly. Whether it's his hat he can't find but it is actually on his head. To, throwing his new white handkerchief in the fire instead of the old newspapers. I would rate Mr Twiddle a 5/5 because I am always in fits of laughter when I read his silly stories.

Read A Local- Too many Secrets By Adele Broadbent

Image result for adele broadbentI absolutely loved the book ‘Too Many Secrets’ because it is not a book that I would usually choose out of the shelf. I have never read any of Adele’s books before and I am sure to read more of her books. ‘Too Many Secrets’ is about a girl called Becs and she lives with her Mum, her step dad Mark and her younger step sister Nick. They move to the bush which Becs is not happy about because she says it will be boring and she won’t get to see her friend from the city. But she sure does find the bush more interesting than she thought it would be.Until she met a boy called Isaiah and that is when their adventures started. She changed her mind about staying in the bush and doesn't want to go back to the city after all. I would rate this book and ⅘ because it is an awesome adventure book and it hooked me in right from the start which made me not want to stop reading!

Relive The Magic- The Long Haul By Jeff Kinney

Image result for the long haulGreg and his family go on a holiday when Rodrick and he are planning other things for summer break. Mum thinks that it will be a good way to spend some time together as a ‘family’. Along the way there are a lot of things that didn’t go as planned. For example- They go to a market and Manny wins a pig, he doesn’t want to leave it there so they have to take it in the car, which was a hassle. I enjoyed this book because it is really funny cause they have to figure out where to stay and things go wrong and they meet weird people along the way. I rate this book a ⅘ because it was a easy read so next time I will choose a more challenging one.

Loved By Others- Double Act By Jacqueline Wilson

Image result for double act jacqueline wilsonRuby and Garnet are identical twins. Their Mum died when they were 7 years old and they are now 10. They do everything together. Until they do an exam for a scholarship for Marnock Heights, the posh boarding school for girls. Garnet gets the scholarship and leaves Ruby with her Dad and his new girlfriend Rose. I really enjoyed Double Act, that Brooke in my class recommended to me. This is the first book that I have read from the author Jacqueline Wilson and I will continue to read more of her books in the future. I recommend this book for people 8-11 because it hooked me in right from the start and I am sure lots of other people will enjoy it as much as I did.

Resilience Quote

In class, we have been exploring our new school values. They are Respect, Integrity, Kindness and Resilience. I chose this quote because resilience is a big thing because if you don't bounce back and learn from your mistakes you won't get very far in life!  Here is a quote that I found, using our value Resilience....

Reading Outside The Box Challenge

Read By Ear- Sunken Forest By Des Hunt
Image result for sunken forest des hunt

Matt was sent to a military style camp. On the way he met a girl called Azura and a boy called Paul. Sunken Forest is set at Lake Waikaremoana near Te Urewera in the North Island. I thought this book was interesting because I felt like I was at Lake Waikaremoana in the book. I recommend this book to children 10+ for girls and boys because my class thought it was a great book and we are a range from 10-12 years of age.

Read A Chunkster-Grandpas Great Escape
By David Walliams

Screenshot 2017-06-06 at 9.35.40 AM.pngYears ago Grandpa was in WW2 flying the Spitfire. But when he is sent to an old folks home it is up to him and his grandson Jack to get him out of there. Only one person can understand Grandpa and that is Jack because they talk like they are in the war still. I absolutely loved this book! I recommend grandpas Great Escape to children 9+ because some words might be a bit tricky to younger children. I give this book a 10/10 because it was funny at parts and is one of my favourites.

Passion Writing Report

History Behind The Squash Racquet
Harrow School in London, England invented the game squash around 1830. In 1864 the first four Squash courts were constructed at the school and Squash was officially founded as a sport in its own right.
Squash is a very popular sport in Egypt and in just one squash club there is an outstanding amount of fifty courts! When squash had just become a thing people used to play with rubber balls. When the ball hit the wall the ball would splatter against the wall.
Nowadays Squash Racquets look a lot different then they used too. Old squash racquets used to be made out of wood and laminated timber. Nowadays they are made out of aluminium, graphite and the strings are made out of synthetic material.
In the old days, there was a small amount of squash racquet brands. These days there are lots more racquet brands, for example, Head, Prince, Tecnifibre, Wilson and Dunlop. The lighter the racquet the better it is but it means that it will be more expensive. Good racquets range from over 300 dollars.

Next time you got to the squash court for a game consider all of the innovation that has gone into producing the game it is today.

What Am I Poem

In class at reading time, we have been working on inferencing.
See if you can figure out my What am I poem!

I am the kaitiaki for people who are blind
For my job I only need you
I take care and am trusted

I am hairy all over
I have strong hearing muscles
I wear a harness for my job

I need to be exercised now and then
Very playful is what I am
Pronouncing around is what I do
When it’s not my duty to do a poo

I am very good at going round obstacles
If you look at me I am quite bondable
That's where my eyes come in

I am cute in all ways
And I live for about 4380 days

What am I?

Writing- P.E

Hit Dem Heads
Sheppard House tried out a new game and this is the rules if you wanted to have a go with your class.
Writing Purpose: To inform other HNI students the rules of the game and to develop our creative thinking ability.
Audience: Mrs Ellmore and HNI students
IMG_0448.JPGIMG_0450.JPG

Use your creativity to come up with 3 alternative names for this very exciting game!
Hit Dem Heads
Quarter Ball
Dodge Attack

Imagine another class here at HNI has not played this game before. Complete the rules below to clearly describe the aim of the game and exactly what the rules are.Aim of the game: To get all four balls into one square (quarter) but not yours and get the least amount of points.
Rules:
1. You must stay on your gluteus maximus the whole time
2. If you stand up on your knees or feet you have to sit out
3.  You have to stay in your quarter
4. Don’t cry when you get hit
5. You can’t roll the ball under the bleaches

Game Adaptations
Use your creative thinking to explore possible adaptations to this game to enhance both the fun factor and the ability to win the game. I have given you one example for each category but challenge yourself with other ideas and thinking.

Attack
Defence
Game Plan/Strategy
  • Use balls other than netballs that aren’t as heavy so the speed of the travelling ball also speeds up the game.
  • You can roll the ball underneath the bleaches.
  • 4 players from each quad are allowed to sit on the bleaches to stretch with their arms and intercept flying balls.
  • If you catch the ball in the full you can stand up and take an extreme shot. Maybe use soft balls if you are using this rule.
  • People on the perimeter of the quad pass the ball to someone closer to the bleaches to allow them to throw it further into the opponent's area.
  • Your team huddles in a circle and figures a quarter they want to gang up on.

Reading Outside The Box Challenge

Second Chance
Tom was very excited to go on a family holiday. But when he finds out that his sister Delia is bringing a friend, his excitement starts to deflate. Tom’s family is going to Pine Tree Riviera. They finally got to Pine Tree Riviera and it was nothing like the photos. It was pouring down with rain for most of the days and they thought that the place they were staying in was just not acceptable. Tom’s Dad rang up the organisers and told them that the place they were staying in was just not acceptable and that they want to change to a different Villa. Finally, in the end, Tom and his family found out that they booked the old Pine Tree Riviera and they got moved to the new one. I rate Tom Gates Super Good Skills (nearly) a ⅘ because It was a good book and funny but in some parts it drags on. I recommend this book to children 8-11 Years of age. Screenshot 2017-04-08 at 11.09.29 AM.png

Reading Outside The Box Challenge

Picture Book
Postman Pat was about to start off his day when a  blue ball came bouncing over a wall and landed by a pillar-box. Postman pat picked it up and put it into his bag. He and his cat Jess were busy all day giving out letters and asking everyone if it is their blue ball. When Postman Pat had finished his day he shook his bag upside down and the blue ball rolled out. ‘If only they put and address on it’ Postman Pat says. He put the Blue ball, on the wall while he folded up his bag. Jess jumped up onto the wall and batted the ball with her paw. The ball bounced over the wall onto the field. Out came a shout from some kids they said ‘Hurray” and Postman Pat replied ‘ Next time put your address on it!’
I rate Postman Pat the blue ball a ⅗. Next time I would pick more of an older book as I would recommend it for little kids around 5-6 years of age.

One of a series
Screenshot 2017-03-23 at 7.21.52 AM.pngAndy is in the shopping centre busting to go to the toilet. There was a fire in there so he thought that he could let it all out onto the fire. He was feeling so much better but then suddenly someone woke him up.  He was in his bedroom wrapped up in blankets on his bed putting out a fire only there was no fire he wet his bed. Later on its school time and he wants to get expelled so he didn’t need to go to school but it wasn’t what he expected when he got put into the Preps class!

I found this book Just Stupid was funny but next time I might try a bit more of a challenge as it is an easy read book. I rate it ⅘. I recommend this book Just Stupid for children around 7-9 years of age as it is very stupid. The title goes well with the book!
